Shirley E. Hansen, 97, of Chatham passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Chatham Hills Subacute Care Center in Chatham.

She was born in Westfield on May 30, 1924, a daughter of the late Robert J. and Helen Skellinger Sargent.  She grew up in Westfield and lived in New Brunswick and returned to Westfield for 33 years.  She had lived in Melfa, VA for 6 years and in Bedminster for 22 years before entering Chatham Hills in July 2020.

Shirley was a graduate of Drake Business College in Plainfield.

Throughout her working career, she worked at a bank, for a home care company, at Rutgers University, and at Koppers Company in Garwood as a secretary.  She ended her work career at the Westfield Board of Realtors retiring in 1986.

Mrs. Hansen was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield where she taught Sunday School and worked in the church office.

She was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her former spouse, Richard E. Hansen, who died October 23, 2014; and by two brothers and their wives; Robert J. Sargent and his wife, Joy; and Arthur F. Sargent and his wife, Betty.

Mrs. Hansen is survived by her daughter, Carol A. Hansen of Bedminster; her son, Curt R. Hansen and his wife, Evelyn, of West Melbourne, FL; and two grandchildren, Amanda D. Hansen and Jeremy C. Hansen.

Funeral arrangements are private under the direction of Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P.O.
