It is with great sadness and regret that we wish to announce the passing of Sheila Joan Tweedie of Far Hills, NJ on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Morristown Medical Center.  Born in January of 1944, in Montreal Canada where she lived with her parents, Leith and Sheila, and brother, Colin, before moving to the small northern town of Sioux Lookout, Ontario until her graduation from Sioux Lookout High School.  She then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she attended and graduated from nursing school at Winnipeg Hospital, as well as meeting and marrying her husband, John.  Moving to Toronto after graduation, Sheila worked as a nurse in the Toronto Children’s Hospital and gave birth to her son, Craig.  Subsequent moves followed including time in Ottawa where their second son, Ryan was born.  After many years of travel, the family settled in Chatham Township, NJ where the boys finished high school, and she became a successful breeder of Golden Retrievers and involved in the equestrian world.  A final move brought them to a small farm in Far Hills, allowing her to expand her business and include the breeding, training, and showing of Norwegian Fjord horses.

Her civic mindedness led her to become a US citizen to enable her to successfully run for council in Far Hills Borough where she served for multiple terms.  She also became heavily involved with the organization, Mane Stream Inc., in Oldwick, NJ, where she served on the board for many years and was instrumental in expansion of the organization that uses horses to provide both mental health and physical therapy for people with a wide range of challenges.  Sheila continued to remain active in the community and equine world, including the Gladstone Equestrian Association and supporting the Junior Drivers Association.

She is survived by her husband, John; sons, Craig and his wife Terri, Ryan and his partner Shana; and grandchildren, John, Kate, Zoe, Flash, Emerson and Erin; and her brother, Colin and his wife, Sandy; along with a sizable number of longtime friends.  Her drive, passion and enthusiasm will be missed.

The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.  In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to Mane Stream, Inc., P.O. Box 305, Oldwick, NJ  08858 (manestreamnj.org) or St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Avenue, Madison, NJ  07940 (sthuberts.org).  Arrangements are by Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.
