S. Jane Franklin, 95, of Bedminster passed away peacefully on Monday, September 12, 2022 at her home.
She was born in Fallsington, PA on July 4, 1927, the youngest of eleven children of William Howard and Louisa Thiel Higgins. She grew up in Trenton and had resided in Bedminster since 1954.
Jane was a graduate of Trenton High School and received her nurse’s training at Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Neptune. At the end of World War II she was involved in the Nurses Cadet Corps, a government training program.
As a registered nurse, Jane worked at Lyons Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bernards Township for 24 years before retiring in 1994. She previously worked at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville and did some private duty nursing. She had also taught nursing classes at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Mrs. Franklin was a founding member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church where she was active in teaching Sunday School and serving on the Missions Committee having taken part in several mission trips.
She was also a founding member of the Juniper Lane Swim Club in Bridgewater and had served on the Board of Directors of the Somerset County Office On Aging. She loved to cook and enjoyed passing on her cooking traits to family. She also loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. Franklin is predeceased by her husband, Lester G. Franklin, Jr., who died September 8, 2005; by a son, Donald J. Franklin, who died March 4, 1995; and by her ten siblings.
She is survived by 2 sons, Brent R. Franklin of Lebanon and David L. Franklin of Yardley, PA; 4 daughters, Leslie J. Bormann of Clinton, NY, Patricia C. Reynolds of North Haven, CT, Karen A. Chapman of Forks Township, PA and Nancy J. Franklin of Glen Gardner; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church, 651 Country Club Road, Bridgewater on Friday, September 16 at 11:00am. A viewing will take place at the church on Friday from 10:00am to 11:00am prior to the service. Interment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Hunterdon Hospice, 215 Route 31, Flemington, NJ 08822. Arrangements are by Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.
