It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of F. Shirley Azud Condit on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, peacefully, at home in Hinesburg, VT. She was 95.
Born in Washington, NJ, Shirley grew up in Raritan and graduated from Somerville High School. After graduation, she attended Traphagen School of Fashion on Broadway in New York City, where she focus on design. She was a very talented artist designing gowns for several Miss America contestants. Upon completion at Traphagen, she was offered a job with Walt Disney Studios in California as a costume designer. Discouraged by her parents due to her very young age, and the distance between New Jersey and California, Shirley did not take the job and ended up not pursuing a career in fashion. Instead, she married David Condit and became a devoted, loving mother. Later in life, she worked with her father, John Azud, in the florist business and also as a home decorating manager at Pergament’s Home Center in Bridgewater.
Shirley was a voracious reader, a fierce pinochle opponent, and an enthusiastic Bingo addict. She developed close friendships and found great Bingo buddies at the Adult Day Center in Bridgewater. There, people discovered the warmth, and love, and big smile that made Shirley such a wonderful and endearing person…one filled with compassion and caring for everyone she touched. And they surrounded her with much love as well.
Always up for an adventure, Shirley liked to be on the go. Many, many, many summers saw time spent on the Jersey Shore. Although she couldn’t swim, she allowed herself to be dragged out into the water by family members. But most of all, she preferred just sitting in her beach chair and reading, or later in the afternoon, a good card game. But it never really mattered where she went, she just liked to go and be part of the gang.
Spending the latter years of her life with daughter Nancy in Vermont, she was received with open arms at the Adult Day Center in Essex, VT and again, discovered caring people, warm friendships, and lots of love. We will always be sincerely grateful to all of the wonderful people who enriched her life. We also give thanks to Alyson and Carrie Rae, our hospice angels, who provided her with such wonderful care and love.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, David; son, Douglas; 2 daughters, Jayne and Susan; and cousin, Henry Harmon. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Condit; her son, David Condit and his wife, Beverly; granddaughter, Kristen Mills and her husband, Andrew; grandson, David Condit and his wife, Christina; and 4 great grandchildren, David and Zachary Condit and Calvin and Holden Mills.
A celebration of life will be held in the Covenant Room of the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church, 279 Route 202 – 206, Bedminster on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Arrangements are by Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.
