Ernest R. Burd, 90, of Charlotte, NC formerly of Bedminster passed away on Monday, November 11, 2022 at Briar Creek Health Center in Charlotte, NC.

He was born in Far Hills on October 4, 1932, a son of the late Robert and Sadie Walsh Burd.  He grew up in Far Hills and Pluckemin and had lived the majority of his life in Bedminster.  He resided in Vass, NC for 18 years before moving to the Briar Creek Health Center one month ago.

Ernie was a 1950 graduate of Bernards High School in Bernardsville.

He was a US Army veteran during the Korean War having served from 1953 to 1955.

Mr. Burd was a union plumber employed by Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local No. 475 of Warren for over 30 years retiring in 1997.

Ernie joined the Far Hills Bedminster Fire Department in March 1957 and served as chief from 1972 to 1974.  He was also a member of the Far Hills Sportsmans Club and the Far Hills Athletic Club and served at one time on the Bedminster Township Planning Board.  He was an avid golfer and was a member of Fox Hollow Golf Club in Branchburg.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jimmi S. Burd, who died September 23, 1988; and by five siblings, Donald Burd, Robert Burd, Edward Burd, Florence Hansen and Josephine Gilman.

Mr. Burd is survived by his wife, Elena DeFilippis Burd; 2 sons, Gregory B. Burd of Bridgewater and Steven L. Burd of Lake Hopatcong; 4 step-daughters, Catherine Zahos of Atlanta, GA, Christine DeFino of Tinton Falls, Elizabeth Reynolds of Atlanta, GA and Jennifer Zahos of Charlotte, NC; 5 grandchildren, Alexandra Vicente, Emily Burd, Caroline Burd, Jacqueline Burd and Kaitlin Burd; and 6 step-grandchildren, Bryce Johnson, Adam Johnson, Zachary DeFino, Joshua DeFino, Lauren Murphy and Sarah Murphy.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 21 at 11:00am at the Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.  Interment will follow at the Bedminster Reformed Church Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday 3 – 5pm.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Far Hills Bedminster Fire Department, 1 Miller Lane, Bedminster, NJ  07921.
