Douglas E. Sloss, 99, of Basking Ridge passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026 at Fellowship Village Health Care Center in Basking Ridge.

He was born in Basking Ridge on February 9, 1927, one of three children of the late William and Elsie Wright Sloss.  He had been a lifelong resident of Basking Ridge.

Doug was a 1945 graduate of Bernards High School in Bernardsville.

He was a US Army veteran of World War II having played the baritone with the 61st Army Ground Forces Band in the European Theater of Operations under General Patton having served from 1945 to 1947.

Mr. Sloss was a mailman with the Basking Ridge Post Office for 50 years before retiring.  He had a wonderful recall of his mail route, the house numbers and the folks who lived in those houses.

Doug loved gardening and maintaining his own property well into his nineties.  He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7858 in Bernardsville.

He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mabel I. Smith Sloss, who died July 15, 2008; and by a grandson, Mark Sloss.

Mr. Sloss is survived by 2 daughters, Pamela Ierubino and her husband, Mark, of Basking Ridge and Suzanne Gonda and her husband, Andrew, of Topton, PA; a son, Paul Sloss and his wife, Sharon, of Middlefield, MA; 7 grandchildren, Pamela Young, Amanda Sobchinsky, Nicholas Ierubino, Scott Sloss, Erin Key, Emily Sanchez and Abigail Bowman; and 5 great grandchildren, Brianna, Gavin, Gracie, Stella and Rowan.

A private family entombment service was held at Somerset Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum, Basking Ridge on Saturday, February 28.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a local food pantry.  Arrangements are by Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Bedminster.
